Hearing Aid Styles

Hearing aids come in various styles and sizes. With today’s micro circuitry, they are light-weight and minimal in size.

Custom products are designed to fit in the ear. For a custom product, an impression is taken of the ear and sent to the hearing aid company where a shell is crafted for the specific shape of your ear and the circuitry is installed within the shell.

Behind the ear (BTE) hearing aids now come in several forms. The traditional form has a casing that fits over the ear and contains all of the hearing aid circuitry. Sound is delivered into the ear through a small piece of tube attached to a custom-made ear mold. Many BTEs now are called receiver in the canal (RIC) styles. In receiver in the canal style hearing aids, some of the hearing aid components are still located in the casing of the hearing aid but the hearing aid receiver (speaker) is in a soft mold located in the ear canal itself.

When deciding on the appropriate style for you, we consider your personal preference, amount of wax the ear canal produces, moisture/sweat issues, size of your ear canal and degree and configuration of hearing loss.
